มูลนิธิทำงานร่วมกับชาวนาที่สุพรรณอย่างใกล้ชิดมานาน 23 ปี
พบว่าระยะเวลาที่ผ่านมาชาวนาไม่เคยร่ำรวยขึ้น
ทุกวันนี้ยังมีปัญหาหนี้สินเพิ่มมากขึ้น เฉลี่ยอยู่ที่ครัวเรือนละ 5 แสนบาท
และส่วนใหญ่ 60% จะเช่าที่ทำกินมีเพียง 40% ที่มีนาของตัว
ขณะที่ต้นทุนการผลิตปัจจุบันนี้ก็เพิ่มสูงขึ้นจากที่เคยอยู่ในระดับ 3-4
พันบาทต่อไร่เป็น 6-7 พันบาทต่อไร่
โดยรับการจำนำข้าวของรัฐบาลยิ่งทำให้ต้นทุนของชาวนาสูงขึ้น
เนื่องจากชาวนาต้องแย่งกันเช่าที่ ทำให้ค่าเช่าสูงขึ้นจากไร่ละพันบาทเป็น
1,500 บาท
“ต้องยอมรับว่าชาวนา 99%
จะปลูกข้าวแบบเดิมไม่ยอมเปลี่ยนคามคิด
เลิกใช้ยาฆ่าแมลงใช้ปุ๋ยอินทรีย์หรือทำตามแบบอย่างชาวนาที่ประสบความสำเร็จ
จะทำแบบง่ายๆ ขายได้เร็ว จ้างคนอื่นๆ ทำ
เพราะเข้าโครงการจำนำก็ได้สูงกว่าต้นทุนการผลิตอยู่แล้ว
ทำให้ในอนาคตชาวนาไทยจะอ่อนแอลงปรับตัวและสู้กับชาวนาประเทศอื่นๆ ไม่ได้”
